Why Pretty Isn’t Enough: The New Era of Beauty Pros

I’ve been in the beauty industry for well over 20 years (hairstylist to makeup artist) and what I’ve learned is pretty will get you noticed, but it won’t keep you booked!

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s constantly heard “the industry is so oversaturated.” Yup! I started makeup during a time when it wasn’t very popular, so to see the drastic shift is amazingly mind-blowing. However COMMA what no one wants to admit is that technique and skill is no longer the only thing that’s separating the pros from those struggling to stay afloat.

With the overflow of YouTube, Instagram and TikTok beauty tutorials found online, clients are wanting more than just pretty eyeshadow and ombré lips. Because I don’t know if y’all are noticing, but the guys and gworls have been eating up their makeup looks as non-professionals! So if anyone is going to pay for a service, understand that they’re looking for an experience! They’re wanting a connection, good energy and vibes, and the very thing that makes you stand out in such an overcrowded industry.

The Problem with “Just Pretty”

Now hear me out, because I know the gworls like to tussle. But we just talked about the market being oversaturated. There’s literally thousands of people who can paint a face.

Now what makes YOU memorable is beyond the latest Fenty foundation and Dior lip oil. It’s in the way you make the client feel seen and heard. I don’t know who needs to hear this, but go ahead and add “Therapist” to your bio lol. (Please don’t do that, beloved). But all jokes aside, our chair becomes a safe-haven and home for those 60-90 minutes. It’s where they feel free to vent, get comfortable and connect on a level deeper than many don’t see. And if we’re being 100% real, many are coming for a glimmer of hope just to keep going.

The New Era of Beauty Pros

We’ve now entered a chapter where the best in the industry hone in on three key points:

  1. Artistry - Be a forever student. Be intentional in sharpening your skills and creating signature looks that stand the test of time.

  2. Energy - As people who work with our hands and our hearts (because we serve!), making sure that you’re showing up as your best and authentic self is so important. This goes beyond skill. Shoot, this is long before you even pick up a brush. Your energy and how you make people feel will leave a lasting impression (and a great review!)

    3. Business - This seems to be the part many fall short. Yes, invest in classes that will sharpen your skills, but knowing how to take care of the business side is equally as important. Branding, client care, annd intentionally strategizing to turn your work into a legacy (think Kevyn Aucoin, A.J. Crimson (SIP), Pat McGrath, Kim Kimble, etc.)

My Turning Point

I remember when I first started working in TV and thought my pretty makeup was going to be enough. Baby! Those first two days turned me every way but loose! I remember calling my boss and freaking out. She laughed at me first, but then she calmed me down and reminded me who I was and what was in ME and not in my kit! (Don’t let that go over your party city wig!!)

But that moment made me realize that beauty without depth is unforgettable.

Once I learned how to merge my artistry with energy and business, shift happened!
